Ash Laboratory
The combustion of coal in power stations generates large quantities of ash.
There are two types of ash produced, clinker-like FBA (furnace bottom ash) and the finer PFA (pulverised fuel ash), both having specific requirements for their use.
The Ash Laboratory monitors ash quality and provides technical back-up for the sale of ash to ensure customer confidence.
The Ash Laboratory provides a range of facilities for assessing the performance of ash.
This covers its major uses including geotechnical applications, such as fill and grout, and performance relative to British standards such as BS 3892 Part 2 covering the use of PFA as a type 1 addition to concrete.
In addition the laboratory can provide facilities for the development of new markets. The expertise available can also assist in the resolution of ash related problems.
